TP-Link TL-POE160S: power one Ethernet device

TL-POE160S adds power to the Ethernet connection for one compatible endpoint. That can be useful when an existing router or switch already supplies data but has no PoE port available.

The checked Amazon link is the black Gigabit TL-POE160S, supplied as one unit. Its two Ethernet sockets form an input and output path. They are not two extra network ports for connecting unrelated devices.

Look for IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at support in the access point, camera or phone’s specifications. The injector detects a compatible powered device and negotiates power rather than simply applying passive voltage to every cable.

A product asking for passive 24V power is not interchangeable with standard PoE+. Nor does a 30W injector satisfy equipment requiring a higher-power 802.3bt supply. Check the endpoint’s full-power requirements, including any attached accessories.

Thirty watts describes the injector’s maximum source budget. Some energy is lost along the cable, so it should not be read as thirty watts guaranteed inside the endpoint.

Use the device’s PoE class and manufacturer compatibility guidance as the deciding information. A camera with heaters or other high-power functions may need more than its basic operating consumption suggests. We have not tested delivery at different cable lengths.

Gigabit operation needs suitable cable and sound terminations. Count the full Ethernet channel when checking the 100-metre limit, including patch leads. The injector does not reset that distance allowance.

Plan a dry indoor location with access to mains power and room around the connectors. If the existing network has 2.5GbE equipment, this injector’s Gigabit path becomes a speed limit. It does not create wireless coverage by itself.

One injector can be convenient for a single new endpoint. Several powered devices may make a PoE switch easier to organise, particularly when you want central power management.

The listing does not guarantee a hardware revision. TP-Link’s package reference includes a power lead, network lead and mounting items, but confirm the supplied revision’s contents if an accessory matters. The recommendation rests on the documented interfaces and standards, not installation or throughput testing.
