Hakko FX-888DX: simple temperature control for a small bench

FX-888DX suits a small electronics bench where straightforward temperature control and replaceable tips matter. Its rotary encoder makes setting changes direct, and presets can keep frequently used temperatures within reach.

The checked blue and yellow EU kit includes the FX-8801 iron. That iron is rated at 65W. The station’s 100W consumption and the optional 95W handpiece describe different things; neither turns the included iron into a 100W tool.

The standard T18-B tip gives you a starting point, but the joint’s size and access may favour another T18 shape. A suitable contact area can transfer heat more effectively than simply increasing the temperature setting.

Practise on an appropriate unpowered board and use a stable work support. Keep your hand on the insulated handle, return the iron to its holder and provide suitable ventilation or fume extraction. Those bench accessories are not all supplied.

Hakko specifies one-degree stability at idle within a stated temperature range. That is not a claim that every joint stays within one degree while it absorbs heat from the tip.

Tip condition, contact and the workpiece affect the process. Temperature correction uses a separately measured tip temperature; entering a different display value without a thermometer is not calibration. We have not measured recovery speed or soldered comparative test joints.

The holder includes cleaning wire and a sponge. Use the sponge damp, follow the manual’s cleaning guidance and keep the working tip appropriately tinned. Avoid striking the iron against the bench to remove residue.

Power down when the tool is not in use and let it cool before maintenance. Replacement tips and handpieces need the correct family: the optional FX-8806 uses T32 tips, not the standard iron’s T18 series.

The German product specification lists 230V mains input, while the station supplies 26V to the iron. Amazon’s generic voltage field is inconsistent, so match the delivered unit’s rating label and EU plug before use.

Choose this kit for regular electronics work with accessible controls. Budget separately for solder, extra tip shapes and fume control. Large heat-demanding joints may justify another handpiece or station after checking the actual task, rather than relying on wattage alone.
